About the Book A Family Apart (Book 1 in the Orphan Train series)

Set in 1860s New York City, the novel opens with Frances Mary Kelly, the eldest daughter, struggling with her family's dire financial situation. Their mother, Ma Kelly, is trying to make ends meet after the death of her husband. Desperate to provide a better future for her children, Ma makes the heart-wrenching decision to send them west on an orphan train, believing they will find better lives with new families.

The Kelly children—Frances Mary, Mike, Danny, Megan, Peg, and Petey—are placed aboard the orphan train bound for Missouri. Along the way, they face numerous challenges and uncertainties. Frances Mary, in particular, struggles with her role as the protector of her siblings and the fear of being separated from them.

Upon arrival in Missouri, the children are taken in by different families. Frances Mary is adopted by the Friedrich family, where she must adapt to her new life while keeping the promise she made to her mother to look after her siblings. Throughout the story, Frances Mary displays remarkable resilience and determination, making tough decisions and facing various obstacles.
