A Farewell to Arms is set during World War I and follows the story of Frederic Henry, an American serving as a lieutenant in the Italian ambulance corps. The novel unfolds in five parts, each chronicling different phases of Henry's life and experiences during the war. The novel begins with Henry's introduction to the war and his budding friendship with fellow soldiers. He meets Catherine Barkley, a British nurse, and a romantic relationship slowly blossoms between them. Henry is wounded in battle and sent to a hospital in Milan, where Catherine is also transferred. Their relationship deepens, and they spend a blissful time together away from the front lines. Henry returns to the war front, where the Italian army faces severe setbacks. Disillusioned by the chaos and brutality, Henry decides to desert the army. Catherine and Henry reunite and flee to neutral Switzerland, where they attempt to build a peaceful life together. The novel concludes with a tragic ending, as Catherine dies during childbirth, leaving Henry to grapple with profound loss and sorrow.
