About the Book A Gathering of Old Men

The story is set on a Louisiana sugarcane plantation in the 1970s. The narrative begins with the discovery of a dead white man, Beau Boutan, on the property of a black sharecropper, Mathu. Sheriff Mapes arrives to investigate the murder, but what unfolds is far more complex than a simple whodunit.

In a surprising turn, a group of elderly African American men, armed and resolute, gather at Mathu's house, each claiming responsibility for the murder. Among them is Candy Marshall, a white woman who grew up under Mathu’s protection and now fiercely defends him. The men’s collective stand is not just about protecting Mathu; it’s an act of defiance and reclaiming dignity after decades of oppression and injustice.

The story is told from multiple perspectives, including the old men, the plantation owners, and the younger generation, which adds layers of depth to the narrative. Through these voices, Gaines masterfully weaves a story of past grievances, present courage, and future aspirations.

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
