About the Book A Lesson Before Dying

A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines is set in the racially segregated South of the 1940s. The story centers on Jefferson, a young Black man wrongfully convicted of murder and sentenced to death, and Grant Wiggins, a disillusioned Black teacher tasked with helping Jefferson die with dignity.

The novel begins with Jefferson’s trial, where his lawyer’s dehumanizing defense likens him to a hog, hoping to spare him from the death penalty. Despite this, Jefferson is convicted. His godmother, Miss Emma, and Grant’s aunt, Tante Lou, persuade Grant to visit Jefferson in prison and help him regain his sense of humanity. Initially resistant, Grant eventually forms a bond with Jefferson, who begins to understand his own worth and dignity through their interactions.

As Jefferson’s execution date approaches, he transforms from a defeated man into a symbol of strength and resistance for his community. The novel delves into themes of racism, injustice, and the quest for dignity, providing a profound commentary on the human condition and the enduring strength of the human spirit.

Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
