About the Book A Long Walk to Water

A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park tells the stories of two young Sudanese individuals, Nya and Salva, whose lives are separated by time but connected by their struggles and resilience.

Nya’s Story (2008): Nya, an eleven-year-old girl, spends her days walking long distances to fetch water for her family. Her daily trek to the pond and back underscores the significant challenges her community faces in accessing clean water, impacting their health and daily lives.

Salva’s Story (1985): Salva, also eleven, is caught in the turmoil of the Sudanese Civil War. Forced to flee his village, he embarks on a perilous journey across Sudan, enduring separation from his family, encounters with dangerous wildlife, and the constant threat of violence. His journey through refugee camps and his eventual quest for a new life highlight his incredible resilience and determination.

The novel alternates between these two narratives, drawing parallels between Nya’s and Salva’s experiences. It concludes on a hopeful note, emphasizing the transformative power of perseverance and the critical importance of access to clean water.
