About the Book A Single Shard

A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park is a Newbery Medal-winning novel set in 12th-century Korea. The story follows a young orphan named Tree-ear, who lives under a bridge with his friend Crane-man. Tree-ear dreams of becoming a master potter and is fascinated by the work of a local potter named Min.

Tree-ear’s journey begins when he accidentally breaks one of Min’s pieces and offers to work for him to pay off the debt. Despite the hard labor and Min’s initial reluctance to teach him, Tree-ear remains determined. His perseverance leads him on a dangerous journey to the royal court in Songdo, where he hopes to secure a commission for Min’s pottery.

Throughout the novel, Tree-ear faces numerous challenges and grows both personally and professionally. The story beautifully captures themes of perseverance, mentorship, and the pursuit of dreams.
