About the Book A Step From Heaven

A Step from Heaven by An Na is a young adult novel that follows the life of Young Ju, a Korean immigrant, from her early childhood in South Korea to her young adulthood in America. The story is told through a series of snapshots, capturing significant moments that shape her journey and identity.

The novel begins with Young Ju’s early years in South Korea, where her family decides to immigrate to the United States, a place she initially imagines as “Mi Gook,” or heaven. However, upon arrival, she quickly realizes that life in America is far from heavenly. The family faces numerous challenges, including language barriers, cultural adjustments, and financial struggles.

Young Ju’s father, Apa, is an abusive alcoholic, which adds to the family’s difficulties. Despite these hardships, Young Ju excels in school and becomes a source of strength for her mother and younger brother, Joon Ho. The novel explores themes of resilience, cultural identity, and the immigrant experience.

As Young Ju grows older, she witnesses her father’s increasing violence and ultimately takes a stand by calling the police, leading to his arrest and eventual departure from their lives. This act of courage marks a turning point for Young Ju and her family, allowing them to begin healing and building a better future.

A Step from Heaven is a powerful narrative that highlights the struggles and triumphs of an immigrant family, offering a deeply moving portrayal of the pursuit of the American Dream.
