About the Book A Thousand Splendid Suns

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini is a profound narrative that intertwines the lives of two Afghan women, Mariam and Laila, against the backdrop of Afghanistan’s tumultuous history. Mariam, an illegitimate child, grows up in a kolba outside Herat, longing for her father’s acceptance. After a series of tragic events, she finds herself married to Rasheed, a shoemaker in Kabul, who becomes increasingly abusive. Laila, born in Kabul and raised with progressive values, faces her own set of tragedies, including the loss of her family. Her path crosses with Mariam’s when she marries Rasheed, setting the stage for a complex relationship between the two women. Together, they endure the hardships imposed by their husband and the societal constraints of a patriarchal culture.

The novel spans the Soviet invasion, the rise of the Taliban, and the post-Taliban rebuilding, painting a picture of a nation in flux. Through the personal struggles and the bond between Mariam and Laila, Hosseini explores themes of love, sacrifice, and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of injustice and hardship.

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
