About the Book     Bearstone

The novel centers on Cloyd Atcitty, a troubled Native American teenager residing in a group home. Struggling with his past and disconnected from his cultural roots, Cloyd finds himself at odds with authority and directionless.

Cloyd is sent to spend the summer with Walter Landis, an elderly rancher living in the Colorado mountains. Initially resistant and rebellious, Cloyd attempts to run away but gradually begins forming a bond with Walter. Through various tasks on the ranch and the calming influence of the natural surroundings, Cloyd starts to change.

One day, Cloyd discovers an ancient stone carving of a bear, which rekindles his connection to his Ute heritage. This discovery becomes a symbol of strength and identity for him.

Walter and Cloyd head into the mountains to reopen an old gold mine, but Walter realizes he is in a way jailing Cloyd and chooses to set him free, to go on a trip up the mountain. While on his trip, Cloyd faces dangers and sees a grizzly bear killed. He returns to the mine, only to find Walter injured. He bravely sees to Walter's rescue.

By the end of the book, Cloyd becomes a responsible man who cherishes his heritage.
