About the Book Bud, Not Buddy

Bud, Not Buddy is set in the Great Depression and follows the journey of a 10-year-old African American boy named Bud Caldwell. Orphaned and living in Flint, Michigan, Bud embarks on an adventurous quest to find his father.

At the start of the novel, we find Bud living in an orphanage, struggling with the recent loss of his mother and the harsh realities of the foster care system. His life takes a pivotal turn when he escapes from a cruel foster home, armed with only a suitcase of precious keepsakes and a flyer featuring Herman E. Calloway and his jazz band, "The Dusky Devastators of the Depression."

Bud believes Herman E. Calloway might be his father. Driven by hope and courage, he sets out on a journey to Grand Rapids, Michigan. Along the way, he encounters various characters who shape his understanding of the world, including Lefty Lewis, a kind man who offers him shelter and food.

Upon arriving in Grand Rapids, Bud finally meets Herman E. Calloway and the band members. Though initially skeptical and gruff, the band begins to warm up to Bud. Through a series of events and discoveries, it is revealed that Herman E. Calloway actually is Bud's grandfather, not his father

The novel concludes with Bud finding a new sense of belonging and family within the jazz band. His journey of self-discovery and resilience ends on a hopeful note as he begins to heal from his past traumas and looks forward to a brighter future.
