About the Book Candide

The story follows Candide, a young man who lives in a protected paradise and is taught by his mentor, Pangloss, that they live in "the best of all possible worlds." However, when Candide is expelled from his paradise, he begins a globe-trotting adventure that exposes him to the harsh realities of the world.

The novella opens in the castle of Baron Thunder-ten-Tronckh in Westphalia, where Candide lives a sheltered life. His tutor, Pangloss, teaches him that their world is the best possible one because everything happens for the best reason. This philosophy is tested when Candide is expelled from the castle for kissing Cunégonde, the Baron's daughter.

After his expulsion, Candide's adventure takes him across Europe and South America. Along the way, he encounters a series of misfortunes, including wars, natural disasters, and betrayal. Despite these hardships, Candide clings to Pangloss's optimistic philosophy, even when he sees his mentor suffer and die.

Candide eventually reunites with Cunégonde and other characters from his past. However, disillusionment sets in as he realizes that Pangloss's philosophy does not hold up against the harshness of reality. The novella ends with Candide's famous conclusion that "we must cultivate our garden," suggesting a turn towards practicality and self-sufficiency.

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
