About the Book Cannery Row

Cannery Row is set in Monterey, California, during the Great Depression. The row is a place where poverty and desperation coexist with community spirit and resilience. The cannery workers and the eclectic mix of residents form the heart of this vibrant but struggling community.

The central figure of Cannery Row is Doc, a marine biologist who runs the Western Biological Laboratory. Doc is both respected and loved by the townspeople for his kindness and wisdom. Other notable characters include Mack and the boys, a group of good-hearted but often misguided drifters, and Dora, the madam of the local brothel, who also plays a significant role in the community.

The story revolves around the lives of these characters and their interactions. Mack and the boys decide to throw a surprise party for Doc as a token of their appreciation. However, their plans often go awry, often leading to humorous situations. The narrative weaves together moments of joy, sorrow, and reflection, painting a vivid picture of life in Cannery Row.

Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
