About the Book Chasing Vermeer

The protagonists of Chasing Vermeer are Petra Andalee and Calder Pillay, two sixth-graders who attend the University School in Hyde Park. Petra is a curious and imaginative girl with a passion for reading, while Calder is a logical thinker who loves puzzles and carries a set of pentominoes wherever he goes. Their unlikely friendship forms the backbone of the story as they join forces to solve the mystery surrounding a missing Vermeer painting.

The adventure begins when a series of mysterious letters are sent to various individuals, including Petra's neighbor, Ms. Hussey. These letters hint at the theft of a Vermeer painting and challenge the recipients to solve the mystery. Petra and Calder become intrigued by the letters and decide to investigate, setting off a chain of events that will test their wits and resourcefulness.

As Petra and Calder dig deeper into the mystery, they discover connections between Vermeer's paintings, a book written by an eccentric author, and the architecture of their school. Their investigation takes them on a thrilling journey through art history, encoded messages, and hidden clues. Along the way, they face numerous challenges and encounters that bring them closer to unraveling the truth behind the stolen painting.
