About the Book Children of the River

Sundara Sovann is a Cambodian teenager who flees her war-torn homeland with her aunt's family to find refuge in the United States. Sundara's life changes dramatically as she adjusts to a new culture while struggling with the trauma of leaving her country and family behind. The novel begins with the harrowing escape from Cambodia, setting the stage for the emotional and cultural challenges Sundara faces in her new life.

In America, Sundara struggles with maintaining her Cambodian heritage while assimilating into American society. She attends high school, where she meets and befriends Jonathan, an American boy who becomes a significant figure in her life. Their relationship adds complexity to Sundara's struggle as she navigates the expectations of her traditional Cambodian family and her growing feelings for Jonathan. The tension between these two worlds is palpable throughout the novel, highlighting the difficulties immigrants face in preserving their cultural identity while adapting to a new environment.

As Sundara becomes more involved with Jonathan, she is forced to confront her past and the memories she has tried to suppress. The book explores her internal conflict and the guilt she feels for surviving when so many of her loved ones did not.

Sundara's story is a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit, as she learns to honor her past while forging a new future. The novel's resolution provides a sense of hope and closure, as Sundara finds a way to integrate her Cambodian identity with her new life in America.

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
