About the Book Chronicle of a Death Foretold

Chronicle of a Death Foretold is set in a small, unnamed town in Colombia. The story unfolds through a series of flashbacks and interviews conducted by an unnamed narrator, who returns to the town 27 years after the events to piece together the sequence of events leading to the death of Santiago Nasar.

The novella begins with the revelation that Santiago Nasar will be murdered. The events leading up to his death are meticulously chronicled. On the morning of his murder, Santiago is unaware of the fate that awaits him. He prepares for his day as usual, while the entire town slowly becomes aware of the Vicario brothers' plan to kill him.

The motive for the murder is tied to the concept of honor. Angela Vicario, the bride of Bayardo San Roman, is returned to her family on the night of her wedding because she is not a virgin. Under pressure from her family, Angela names Santiago Nasar as the man who deflowered her. This accusation sets the wheels in motion for the Vicario brothers, Pablo and Pedro, to seek revenge and restore their sister's honor.

Despite numerous warnings and opportunities to prevent the murder, the townspeople's inaction seals Santiago's fate. The narrative reveals a collective sense of fatalism and the inevitability of Santiago's death. The complex interplay of social norms, personal honor, and community dynamics make it clear that Santiago's murder was, in many ways, unavoidable.

Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
