About the Book Cold Sassy Tree

Picture a small town in Georgia, 1906. Will Tweedy, the 14-year-old protagonist, narrates the events that unfold after his grandmother's unexpected death. The town of Cold Sassy Tree is turned upside down when his grandfather, Enoch Rucker Blakeslee, announces his intent to remarry just three weeks after becoming a widower.

Rucker's decision to marry Miss Love Simpson, a much younger woman and a Yankee to boot, creates a scandal in the close-knit community. The townspeople, along with Will's family, are thrown into a whirlwind of gossip and moral judgment. Despite the controversy, Rucker remains steadfast in his decision, showing his rebellious spirit and disregard for societal norms.

Throughout the novel, Will Tweedy grows from a naive boy into a more mature young man. His close relationship with his grandfather allows him to see the complexities of adult life, love, and loss. Will's adventures, including a near-death experience on a train track and his budding romantic feelings, add layers to his character, making him relatable and intriguing.

Burns paints a vivid picture of life in the early 1900s, capturing the essence of a time when horse-drawn carriages and telephones coexisted. The novel provides insights into the social and economic conditions of the South, offering readers a glimpse into a bygone era.
