About the Book Copper Sun

Copper Sun starts with Amari, a 15-year-old girl living a contented life in her African village. Her world shatters when her village is raided by slave traders. Captured and shipped to America, Amari faces unimaginable horrors.

Upon arrival in America, Amari is sold to a plantation owner in South Carolina. There, she meets Polly, an indentured servant with dreams of a better life. Though they come from vastly different backgrounds, Amari and Polly form an unlikely bond. Together, they endure the brutal conditions of slavery, clinging to the fragments of hope that occasionally pierce their bleak reality.

In a daring quest for freedom, Amari and Polly escape the plantation. Their perilous journey northward is fraught with danger but also marked by acts of kindness that reignite their belief in humanity. Draper skillfully navigates this narrative, weaving a story that is as inspiring as it is heartbreaking.

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
