About the Book Crime and Punishment

Crime and Punishment revolves around Rodion Raskolnikov, a destitute former student in St. Petersburg. Struggling with his desperate financial situation and philosophical ideals, he devises a plan to murder Alyona Ivanovna, a corrupt pawnbroker, rationalizing it as a means to rid society of her malice.

However, the murder spirals out of control, leading to the unexpected death of Alyona's innocent sister, Lizaveta. Raskolnikov's life becomes a tangled web of paranoia, guilt, and psychological torment as he grapples with his conscience and the consequences of his actions.

The story is enriched by a cast of multidimensional characters who influence Raskolnikov's journey. These include Sofya Semyonovna Marmeladov (Sonya), a compassionate yet impoverished woman who becomes his moral compass, and Porfiry Petrovich, the astute detective who suspects Raskolnikov from the start but employs psychological tactics to corner him.

Raskolnikov's internal struggle culminates in his eventual confession and sentencing to Siberia. It is there, influenced by Sonya's unwavering support and his own introspection, that he begins a path toward spiritual awakening and redemption, offering a glimmer of hope amid his profound suffering.
