About the Book Cyrano de Bergerac
The play begins in a bustling theater in Paris, where the audience eagerly awaits a performance. Cyrano de Bergerac, a skilled poet, swordsman, and soldier, disrupts the play to challenge a boorish actor who he feels dishonors the stage. Cyrano is known for his remarkable wit and courage, but also for his extraordinarily large nose, which causes him deep personal insecurity.
Cyrano secretly loves his beautiful cousin, Roxane, but believes she could never love him because of his appearance. Roxane, unaware of Cyrano’s feelings, confides in him that she loves the handsome Christian de Neuvillette, a new cadet in Cyrano’s regiment. She asks Cyrano to protect Christian, and Cyrano, despite his own feelings, agrees. Cyrano then helps Christian woo Roxane by lending him his poetic skills, writing love letters on Christian’s behalf.
One of the most famous scenes in the play occurs when Christian struggles to speak to Roxane beneath her balcony. Cyrano, hidden in the shadows, feeds him eloquent lines, making Roxane fall deeper in love with Christian’s “words.” Eventually, Cyrano speaks directly to Roxane, and she is enchanted by his passion, though she believes the words are Christian’s.
The play shifts to the battlefield, where Cyrano and Christian serve together. Cyrano continues writing letters to Roxane, who remains unaware of his true identity as the author. Roxane travels to the front lines to see Christian, spurred by the soul-stirring letters. Christian, realizing Cyrano’s feelings for Roxane, urges Cyrano to reveal the truth. Before Cyrano can confess, Christian is mortally wounded and dies in Roxane’s arms.
Fifteen years later, Roxane lives in a convent, mourning Christian. Cyrano visits her regularly, hiding his feelings and his own suffering. One day, Cyrano, gravely injured, recites one of the letters he wrote to her. Roxane finally realizes that Cyrano was her true love all along. Cyrano, content that his love is finally known, dies with honor and dignity.
