About the Book Daisy Miller

The novella is structured around the experiences of Winterbourne, a young American expat residing in Europe, and his encounter with Daisy Miller, an exuberant and naive American girl traveling with her family.

Winterbourne meets Daisy in Vevey, Switzerland, where he's visiting his aunt. Daisy is accompanied by her younger brother, Randolph, and their mother. Daisy's flirtatious nature and open demeanor intrigue Winterbourne, yet they also raise eyebrows among the more conservative European community. Winterbourne becomes fascinated by her, despite his aunt's disapproval.

The story moves to Rome, where Daisy's behavior continues to scandalize expatriate society. She engages in a close friendship with an Italian gentleman named Giovanelli, which further isolates her from the American expatriate community. Winterbourne, still fascinated, attempts to understand her intentions and character, torn between admiration and disapproval.

The climax occurs when Winterbourne finds Daisy and Giovanelli at the Colosseum at night, a dangerous place due to the risk of contracting Roman fever (malaria). Daisy falls ill shortly after and eventually dies. Winterbourne is left to reflect on his judgments and the authenticity of Daisy's character, understanding too late that her innocence was genuine, and his and society's judgments were harsh and misplaced.

Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
