About the Book Dogsong

Russel, a 14-year-old Inuit boy living in a modernizing village in Alaska feels a growing disconnect between his traditional heritage and the encroaching influences of contemporary society. The book begins with Russel's sense of unease, as he notices how much his community has changed — from their reliance on snowmobiles over dog sleds to the shift from hunting to supermarket dependency. This modern way of life has left Russel feeling lost and unfulfilled.

Determined to find a sense of purpose and identity, Russel turns to an elder named Oogruk. Oogruk, a repository of traditional wisdom, introduces Russel to the old ways — teaching him how to harness and command a dog sled team. Through Oogruk's guidance, Russel learns not only the skills necessary for survival in the harsh Arctic environment but also the spiritual significance of these practices. Russel's mentor instills in him the importance of listening to the land, the animals, and the ancestors.

With Oogruk's blessing, Russel sets out on a solo expedition across the frozen wilderness. During this arduous journey, Russel confronts numerous physical challenges, including blizzards, starvation, and isolation. However, these trials are secondary to the internal struggles he faces. In the solitude of the tundra, Russel struggles with his identity, his relationship with nature, and his place in a rapidly changing world. His dreams and the songs of his ancestors guide him, providing both comfort and wisdom.

Over the course of his adventure, Russel grows stronger and more self-reliant. He learns to trust his instincts and the bond with his dogs deepens. The climax of the story sees Russel returning to his village, not only with a renewed sense of identity but also with a profound understanding of the interconnectedness of life, tradition, and nature.

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
