About the Book The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde tells the story of Dr. Henry Jekyll, a respected scientist who creates a potion that transforms him into the sinister Mr. Edward Hyde. Dr. Jekyll initially uses this transformation to indulge in immoral acts without tarnishing his good name. However, as time passes, Mr. Hyde grows stronger, and Dr. Jekyll finds it increasingly difficult to control his alter ego. The novella explores the duality of human nature and the struggle between good and evil within a single individual.

The story is set in Victorian London and begins with Mr. Utterson, a lawyer and friend of Dr. Jekyll, who becomes concerned about a mysterious will left by Dr. Jekyll. The will states that in the event of Dr. Jekyll's disappearance or death, all his possessions should be handed over to Mr. Hyde. Mr. Utterson's investigations lead him to uncover the horrifying truth about Dr. Jekyll's experiments and the true identity of Mr. Hyde.

Themes in the book The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Duality of Human Nature: One of the central themes of the novella is the duality of human nature. Stevenson explores the idea that every individual harbors both good and evil tendencies. Dr. Jekyll represents the 'good' side of humanity, while Mr. Hyde embodies the 'evil' side. The struggle between these two aspects of personality raises questions about morality, identity, and the complexity of the human psyche.

The Consequences of Unchecked Ambition: Dr. Jekyll's experiments are driven by his desire to separate his good and evil selves, reflecting the dangers of unchecked ambition. The novella serves as a cautionary tale about the ethical boundaries of scientific exploration and the potential consequences of overreaching.

The Victorian Society and Repression: Set in Victorian London, the novella also critiques the societal norms and repression of the era. The strict moral codes of the time forced individuals to suppress their darker impulses, which could lead to disastrous outcomes when those impulses are finally released, as seen with Mr. Hyde.
