About the Book Dubliners

Through a series of fifteen short stories, each detailing a scene in the life of a Dublin resident at the turn of the 20th century, Dubliners displays Joyce’s consummate control of nuances, emotions, and images. The individual tales are not difficult to read, but the language Joyce uses to convey character, setting, and mood is both subtle and revealing.

In "An Encounter," two schoolboys, seeking adventure, skip school to wander around Dublin. Their day takes a dark turn when they meet a strange man, highlighting the themes of escape and disillusionment.

"Araby" tells the story of a young boy's infatuation with his friend's sister. His quest to buy her a gift at the Araby bazaar ends in disappointment, symbolizing the loss of innocence and the harsh realities of life.

"Eveline" focuses on a young woman named Eveline who is torn between her promise to her dying mother and her desire to escape her oppressive life in Dublin by eloping with a sailor. The story underscores themes of duty and entrapment.

"After the Race" portrays a young man named Jimmy Doyle, who squanders his money in a high-stakes card game. It reflects the allure and pitfalls of social ambition and economic recklessness.

In "Two Gallants," two men, Lenehan and Corley, as they conspire to swindle a maid. It highlights themes of moral decay and exploitation.

In "The Boarding House," Mrs. Mooney runs a boarding house where she manipulates events to ensure her daughter, Polly, marries one of the boarders, Mr. Doran. The story examines issues of social pressure and manipulation.

"A Little Cloud" features Little Chandler, who envies his successful friend Gallagher. His realization of his own mediocrity and the constraints of his life illustrate themes of unfulfilled potential and regret.

"Counterparts" is about Farrington, a discontented scrivener, vents his frustrations through drinking and domestic abuse. The story exposes themes of anger, impotence, and the cyclical nature of despair.

"Clay" is the story of Maria, a spinster, spends Halloween with her former foster family. The story subtly conveys themes of loneliness, routine, and missed opportunities.

In "A Painful Case" Mr. Duffy, a solitary man, ends his brief friendship with Mrs. Sinico, only to learn of her tragic death years later. The story explores isolation and the consequences of emotional detachment.

"Ivy Day in the Committee Room" is set during an election campaign, and captures the disillusionment and stagnation in Irish politics. It reflects on themes of political paralysis and lost ideals.

"A Mother" tells how Mrs. Kearney's ambitions for her daughter Kathleen's musical career are thwarted by bureaucratic incompetence. The story examines the conflict between individual aspirations and institutional constraints.

"Grace" follows Mr. Kernan, who, after a drunken fall, undergoes a superficial spiritual awakening. It critiques the hollow nature of religious and social conventions.

The final story, "The Dead," centers on Gabriel Conroy, who experiences an epiphany during a holiday gathering. The story beautifully captures themes of love, mortality, and the passage of time.

Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
