About the Book    Esperanza Rising

Esperanza Rising follows the life of Esperanza Ortega, a young girl born into a wealthy family in Aguascalientes, Mexico. Set against the backdrop of the Mexican Revolution and the Great Depression, the story begins with Esperanza living a privileged life on her family's ranch. However, tragedy strikes when Esperanza's father is killed by bandits, and their home is set ablaze by their greedy uncle, Tío Luis, who covets the family land.

Forced to flee to the United States, Esperanza and her mother, Ramona, find themselves working as migrant laborers in California. The transition from a life of luxury to one of hard labor and poverty is challenging. Esperanza must learn resilience and cope with numerous hardships, including discrimination, illness, and the struggle to adapt to her new environment. Throughout the novel, Esperanza's character grows as she discovers strength, hope, and the true meaning of family and community.
