About the Play Everyman

Everyman is a morality play that dramatizes the life and death of the main character, Everyman. The play serves as an allegory for the human condition and the quest for salvation. It focuses on the protagonist's reckoning with his life's deeds as he faces death and prepares for judgment.

The story begins with God sending Death to summon Everyman. Death informs Everyman that his time on Earth is up, and he must make a reckoning of his life. Everyman pleads for more time, but Death is adamant.

Everyman initially seeks companionship on his final journey. He turns to Fellowship, Kindred, and Goods, but all abandon him. These characters symbolize worldly relationships and material possessions, which cannot accompany him after death.

Desperate, Everyman seeks comfort from Good Deeds. However, Good Deeds is too weak to help because Everyman has neglected them throughout his life. Good Deeds directs him to Knowledge, who guides him to Confession. Through penance, Everyman strengthens Good Deeds, who then agrees to accompany him.

Everyman is finally ready to face God's judgment. Good Deeds remains by his side, symbolizing the idea that only our good deeds can follow us into the afterlife. The play ends with a message from a Doctor, who emphasizes the moral of the story.

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
