About the Book Fallen Angels

Fallen Angels follows the story of Richie Perry, a young African American teenager from Harlem who enlists in the U.S. Army after finishing high school. The novel begins with Perry's arrival in Vietnam, where he hopes to find direction and purpose in his life.

Richie quickly forms bonds with fellow soldiers, including Peewee, Lobel, and Johnson. Together, they face the brutal realities of war, from intense combat situations to the emotional and psychological toll of violence and loss. Myers paints a vivid picture of the fear, confusion, and camaraderie that define the soldiers' experiences.

Throughout the novel, Richie struggles with the omnipresence of death. He witnesses the deaths of friends and faces his mortality in several close encounters. These experiences force him to confront his beliefs about heroism, duty, and the morality of war.

Letters to and from home play a crucial role in the narrative. They provide a stark contrast between the soldiers' harrowing experiences in Vietnam and the lives they left behind. These letters also serve as a vehicle for exploring the emotional distance that grows between Richie and his family as he becomes more entrenched in the war.

The climax of the novel occurs during a particularly intense battle, where Richie and his squad are forced to fight for their lives. The chaos and violence of the scene underscore the senselessness of the conflict. In the resolution, Richie is injured and sent home, his perspective on life forever changed by his experiences in Vietnam.

Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
