About the Play Fences

The protagonist, Troy Maxson, is a former baseball player who now works as a garbage collector. The play opens with Troy's weekly ritual of sharing a drink with his friend Bono. We quickly learn about Troy's battle with racial discrimination, which prevented him from advancing in baseball despite his exceptional talent.

Troy lives with his wife, Rose, and their teenage son, Cory. Cory is a promising football player, but Troy's own experiences lead him to discourage Cory's ambitions, fearing the same racial injustices will thwart his son. This conflict becomes a central plot point, illustrating the generational tensions and differing aspirations within the family.

Troy also has two other children from previous relationships. His older son, Lyons, is a musician who often borrows money from Troy. His daughter, Raynell, is born out of an extramarital affair, which strains his marriage with Rose.

The play progresses as Troy's past mistakes and present actions catch up with him. He fights for a promotion at work, struggles with marital fidelity, and attempts to dominate his household, leading to various confrontations. His refusal to allow Cory to pursue football culminates in a physically confrontational scene that eventually leads Cory to leave home.

In the final act, Troy's death brings the family together. The play ends with Cory and Raynell singing a song that their father used to sing, closing the narrative on a note of bittersweet reflection.

The play deeply examines themes of deferred dreams and generational conflict, capturing the complexities of African American life during that era.

This Page Is Under Construction

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
