About the Book Freedom Train
The Freedom Train was a traveling exhibition of documents, including the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights, among other documents, designed to promote national unity and civil rights in 1947.
Clyde Thompson's older brother was a guard on the train, and Clyde was invited to recite the Freedom Pledge when the train stopped in their town. Clyde wants to recite the Pledge, but he is afraid he will mess up, dishonor his brother and family, and embarrass himself.
Meanwhile, Clyde becomes friends with William Thomason, an African-American boy whose father is a doctor--a friendship that is not condoned by Clyde's community. When Clyde stands up for his friend, it has a profound impact on his family and his community.
When the Freedom Train arrives, Clyde stands to recite the Freedom Pledge. Can he do it?
This Page Is Under Construction
It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
