About the Book Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story

Gifted Hands traces the remarkable life of African-American Ben Carson, starting from his early years in Detroit, Michigan. Raised by a single mother, Sonya Carson, Ben and his brother Curtis faced numerous challenges, including poverty and struggling in school. Sonya, despite her own limited education, instilled in her sons the importance of education, hard work, and faith. She encouraged them to read books and broaden their horizons, often limiting their television time.

Ben's academic journey was fraught with difficulties. He was initially a poor student, struggling with low self-esteem and anger issues. However, a turning point came when Ben discovered his love for reading and learning. This newfound passion transformed him from a failing student to the top of his class. His intellectual prowess eventually earned him a scholarship to Yale University, where he graduated with a degree in psychology.

Following his time at Yale, Ben attended the University of Michigan Medical School, where he developed an interest in neurosurgery. His career took off when he joined Johns Hopkins University as a neurosurgery resident. Carson's surgical skills and innovative techniques brought him international acclaim. One of his most famous achievements was performing the first successful separation of conjoined twins joined at the back of the head.
