About the Book    Great Expectations

Great Expectations is the story of Pip, an orphan raised by his sister and her husband, Joe Gargery. Pip's life changes dramatically when he meets an escaped convict named Magwitch, who demands his help. Shortly after, Pip is invited to the home of Miss Havisham, a wealthy but eccentric woman who lives in perpetual mourning after being jilted at the altar. There, Pip meets and falls in love with Estella, Miss Havisham's beautiful but cold ward.

Pip's fortunes change when he receives a large inheritance from an anonymous benefactor and moves to London to become a gentleman. He assumes Miss Havisham is his benefactor and that she intends for him to marry Estella. However, he later learns that his true benefactor is Magwitch, the convict he helped as a child. This revelation forces Pip to reevaluate his values and the true meaning of gentility and wealth.

Throughout the novel, Pip struggles with his conscience, loyalty to Joe and Biddy (his childhood friend), and his unrequited love for Estella. In the end, Pip matures into a man who understands the importance of integrity and human kindness, rather than social status and wealth.

Themes in the book Great Expectations

Social Class and Ambition: The novel critiques the Victorian social class system and the notion that money can buy happiness or elevate one's status. Pip's ambition to rise above his humble beginnings leads him to make choices that ultimately bring him sorrow rather than joy.

Love and Rejection: Throughout the story, characters experience various forms of love and rejection, from Pip's unreciprocated love for Estella to Miss Havisham's perpetual heartbreak. These experiences shape their identities and actions.

Crime and Redemption: The story examines crime and its consequences, as well as the possibility of redemption. Magwitch's transformation from a hardened criminal to a devoted benefactor challenges the notion of inherent evil.

Personal Growth and Moral Development: Pip's journey is one of personal growth and moral development. His experiences teach him valuable lessons about empathy, humility, and the true meaning of success.

Activity Ideas for the book Great Expectations

Character Analysis: Have students create character profiles of Pip, Estella, Miss Havisham, and other key characters. Encourage them to include physical descriptions, personality traits, motivations, and how they evolve throughout the story.

Debate: Divide the class into two teams - one arguing for Pip's actions as morally justified and the other against. This activity allows students to dig deeper into the moral complexities of the story.

Creative Writing: Ask students to write an alternate ending or chapter from another character's perspective, such as Estella or Miss Havisham. This activity encourages creative thinking and helps students understand different viewpoints.

Literary Elements Scavenger Hunt: Have students search for examples of literary elements in the novel (e.g., foreshadowing, symbolism, irony). This activity promotes close reading and helps students better understand how these elements contribute to the story.

Interactive Timeline: Create an interactive timeline of key events in Pip's life. Students can add their own insights and reflections as they read the novel. This activity encourages students to make connections between events and themes.
