About the Book Heart of Darkness
The story begins on the Thames River, where the protagonist, Marlow, recounts his experiences as a steamboat captain in the African Congo. He is hired by a Belgian trading company to venture into the deep, uncharted regions of Congo, ostensibly to bring back ivory.
Marlow's mission is not just about the ivory. He's also tasked with locating Mr. Kurtz, a highly successful and enigmatic ivory trader who has gone rogue. Through his travels, Marlow hears various accounts of Kurtz's brilliance and his descent into madness.
Upon reaching Kurtz's station, Marlow discovers a horrifying reality. Kurtz has set himself up as a god-like figure among the indigenous people, ruling through fear and brutality. The station itself is a grotesque manifestation of European colonialism's worst excesses.
