About the Book Holes |
Holes is the story of the misadventures of Stanley Yelnats IV, a boy wrongfully convicted of a crime he did not commit. Sentenced to eighteen months at Camp Green Lake, Stanley finds himself in a desolate wasteland where the largest lake in Texas used to be. The boys at the camp are required to dig a hole five feet wide and five feet deep every day, under the pretense of building character. However, Stanley quickly discovers that there may be more to these holes than meets the eye. Parallel narratives reveal the history of Green Lake, the Yelnats family curse, and how it is intricately linked to the fate of an old town schoolteacher named Katherine Barlow. Sachar deftly navigates us through time, connecting past and present with the story of "Kissin' Kate" Barlow and the treasure that everyone seems to be unknowingly digging for. Holes is a Newbery Medal winner. |

The Power of Friendship: The bond between Stanley and Zero develops as they endure the hardships of the camp together. Their relationship is a testament to the strength that comes from loyalty and friendship. Justice and Injustice: Holes is a critique of the justice system, portraying the way it sometimes fails society's underprivileged and innocent, like Stanley and Zero. Perseverance: The boys at Camp Green Lake show varying degrees of resilience and perseverance—traits that help Stanley and Zero overcome the challenges they face. The Importance of History: The book suggests that understanding our history is paramount to not repeating the mistakes of the past—shown through the winding tales of Green Lake's inhabitants.
