About the Book How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents

The story is told through a series of interconnected vignettes that jump back and forth in time, providing glimpses into the lives of the Garcia sisters—Carla, Sandra, Yolanda, and Sofia. This non-linear structure allows readers to piece together the family's history from their early years in the Dominican Republic to their adjusting to life in the United States.

The novel begins with the sisters as adults, struggling with their identities in America. It then moves backward chronologically, revealing their childhood and teenage years in their native country before their forced migration to the U.S. after their father's involvement in a political rebellion against the dictatorship in the Dominican Republic.

Through these fragmented stories, we see the Garcia girls struggling with their bicultural existence, each sister dealing with the challenges of assimilation in different ways. From language barriers and cultural misunderstandings to internal family conflicts, the novel paints a vivid picture of the immigrant experience.

This Page Is Under Construction

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
