About the Book Hush

Books have a unique way of reflecting the complexities of life, and Hush by Jacqueline Woodson is no exception. This compelling novel takes readers on an emotional rollercoaster as it explores the impact of identity, family, and societal expectations on a young girl’s life.

Evangeline "Toswiah" Green's life changes forever when her father, a police officer, witnesses a crime and decides to testify against his fellow officers. This brave act forces the entire family into the Witness Protection Program, where they must leave everything behind and start anew. Toswiah, along with her sister Cameron, and their parents, are given new identities and relocated to a different city. Toswiah becomes Evie, and she must deal with the sudden loss of her past life, friends, and even her name.

Adapting to a new identity isn't easy for Toswiah. She struggles with the loss of her old self and the uncertainty of her new life. The Green family begins to unravel under the immense pressure. Toswiah's mother sinks into depression, her sister becomes increasingly rebellious, and her father withdraws into himself. Each family member's struggle with their new circumstances adds layers of complexity to the narrative.

Despite the challenges, Toswiah slowly begins to find her footing in her new environment. She forms a tentative friendship with a girl named Mary, who shares some of her interests. Through her relationship with Mary and her own inner strength, Toswiah starts to reconcile her past and her present. The book ends on a note of cautious optimism as Toswiah, now Evie, looks forward to the future, knowing that while her past will always be a part of her, it does not have to define her.

Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
