About the Book Incident at Hawk's Hill

Incident at Hawk’s Hill by Allan W. Eckert is a captivating historical novel set in 1870 on the Canadian prairies. The story revolves around six-year-old Ben MacDonald, a shy and intelligent boy who feels more at ease with animals than with people. One day, Ben wanders away from his home and gets lost in the vast prairie.

During his time in the wild, Ben encounters a mother badger who has recently lost her young. The badger, despite her initial wariness, begins to care for Ben, bringing him food and teaching him survival skills. Ben, in turn, starts to mimic the badger’s behavior, forming a unique bond with her. This relationship helps him survive for two months in the wilderness.

The novel explores themes of survival, the bond between humans and animals, and the struggle between good and evil, represented by the characters of Ben and the antagonist, George Burton. Burton is a thief and bully who poses a threat to both Ben and the badger.

Ben’s family, particularly his father, never gives up hope of finding him. When Ben is finally discovered, he is initially wild and unrecognizable, but he gradually reintegrates into his family and community. The badger, who follows Ben home, becomes a symbol of his extraordinary adventure and the bond they shared.
