About the Book Island of the Blue Dolphins |
The story begins with Karana, a young girl living with her tribe, the Nicoleño, on San Nicolas Island off the coast of California. The natives lead a peaceful life until an Aleutian ship arrives, bringing with it turmoil and tragedy. The Aleuts, led by Captain Orlov, come to hunt sea otters, promising the tribe a share of their catch. However, the agreement ends in a bloody conflict, resulting in the loss of many tribe members, including Karana's father, the chief. Karana's story of survival begins when her tribe decides to leave the island for the mainland. In the chaos of departure, Karana's younger brother, Ramo, is left behind. Demonstrating the deep bonds of family, Karana jumps from the ship to stay with him. Sadly, Ramo is soon killed by wild dogs, leaving Karana utterly alone. From here, the novel follows her extraordinary tenacity and ingenuity as she learns to fend for herself amidst numerous challenges and dangers. Isolated yet resilient, Karana builds a shelter, crafts weapons, and even tames a wild dog she names Rontu. Throughout her solitary years, she experiences moments of connection with the natural world, discovering inner strength and independence. Her story concludes with the arrival of a ship, which ultimately brings her back to civilization. The novel leaves readers with a profound appreciation of human endurance and the beauty of nature. Island of the Blue Dolphins is a Newbery Medal winner.
