About the Book It's Like This, Cat

It’s Like This, Cat by Emily Neville, a Newbery Medal-winning novel, follows the life of Dave Mitchell, a 14-year-old navigating mid-20th century New York City. The story begins with Dave adopting a stray cat, simply named “Cat,” which sparks a series of adventures and personal growth.

Dave’s home life is characterized by frequent arguments with his father and caring for his asthmatic mother. To find solace, Dave often visits his elderly neighbor, Kate, who has a house full of stray cats.

Through Cat, Dave forms new relationships, including with a troubled college student named Tom and his first girlfriend, Mary. The novel explores themes of family relationships, friendship, loss, and compassion, highlighting Dave’s emotional maturation as he navigates these experiences.
