About the Book Joey Pigza Loses Control

This book is the sequel to Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key and continues Joey’s journey as he navigates the challenges of his condition.

The story begins with Joey heading to spend six weeks with his estranged father, Carter Pigza. Joey is eager to bond with his father, despite his mother’s concerns about Carter’s influence. Carter, who struggles with alcoholism, believes that Joey should be free from his ADHD medication and flushes Joey’s meds down the toilet. This decision sets off a series of events that test Joey’s ability to control his behavior without medication.

Throughout the summer, Joey tries to impress his father and fit into his new environment. He joins the Police Athletic League baseball team, where his father is the coach. Joey’s natural talent as a pitcher shines, but the pressure to perform and his father’s erratic behavior create a tumultuous experience.

The novel explores themes of personal growth, resilience, and the complexities of family relationships. Joey’s struggle to manage his ADHD without medication highlights the challenges faced by children with similar conditions. His journey is one of self-discovery, as he learns to navigate his emotions and actions in the face of adversity.

Jack Gantos’s writing is both humorous and heartwarming, capturing Joey’s voice with authenticity and empathy.
