About the Book Jubilee

Jubilee is not just a novel; it's a historical odyssey. Rooted in the real-life experiences of Walker's great-grandmother, the story spans from the antebellum South to the post-Civil War era. This richly detailed narrative offers an immersive look at the life of Vyry, a mixed-race woman born into slavery who fights for her freedom and dignity.

The novel begins with Vyry as a young girl on the Dutton plantation. Her mother, Hetta, is a slave, and her father is the white plantation owner, John Dutton. Despite her mixed heritage, Vyry is raised as a slave, facing the brutal realities of her status. The early chapters paint a vivid picture of her struggles and the relationships that shape her youth.

As Vyry grows older, her yearning for freedom intensifies. The novel follows her through the trials and tribulations of escaping slavery, surviving the Civil War, and adjusting to life as a free woman. Alongside her husband Innis Brown, Vyry strives to build a better future for her children, despite the relentless challenges they face.

This Page Is Under Construction

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
