About the Play King Lear
King Lear by William Shakespeare narrates the tale of an elderly king who decides to divide his kingdom among his three daughters, based on their professions of love for him. His elder daughters, Goneril and Regan, shower him with insincere flattery, while his youngest daughter, Cordelia, refuses to exaggerate her feelings. Offended by her honesty, Lear disowns Cordelia and allocates the kingdom to Goneril and Regan.
Lear soon discovers his grave error as Goneril and Regan strip him of his power and dignity, driving him to madness. He roams the heath during a storm, accompanied by his loyal Fool and the disguised nobleman, Kent.
In a parallel storyline, Gloucester is deceived by his illegitimate son, Edmund, into believing that his legitimate son, Edgar, is plotting against him. Gloucester is blinded and left to wander, guided by the disguised Edgar.
The play reaches its tragic peak when Cordelia returns with a French army to save her father, but they are defeated. Edmund’s treachery leads to the deaths of Cordelia and Lear, who dies of grief. The rivalry between Goneril and Regan over Edmund results in their own deaths. Ultimately, the kingdom is left to Albany, Edgar, and Kent, who must restore order to the fractured realm.
This Page Is Under Construction
It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
