About the Book Kira-Kira

Kira-Kira by Cynthia Kadohata is a coming-of-age novel that follows the life of Katie Takeshima, a young Japanese American girl growing up in the 1950s. The story is set against the backdrop of the family’s move from Iowa to Georgia, where they face racial prejudice and economic hardship.

Katie’s older sister, Lynn, plays a central role in her life, teaching her to see the world as “kira-kira,” a Japanese term meaning glittering or shining. Lynn’s illness and eventual death profoundly impact Katie, who must navigate her grief while holding onto the lessons her sister taught her. The novel eloquently delves into themes of family, resilience, and the lasting strength of hope.

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
