About the Book Les Miserables

Les Misérables follows the life of Jean Valjean, a man who is released from prison after serving 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread. Despite his attempts to lead an honest life, society’s prejudice against ex-convicts forces him to assume a new identity. Under the alias Monsieur Madeleine, he becomes a successful factory owner and the mayor of Montreuil-sur-Mer.

The story also introduces Fantine, a woman abandoned by her lover and left to care for her daughter, Cosette. Fantine’s life spirals into poverty, leading her to prostitution. Valjean, moved by her plight, promises to care for Cosette after Fantine’s death.

Valjean rescues Cosette from the abusive Thénardiers and raises her as his own. Meanwhile, Inspector Javert, a relentless police officer, continues to pursue Valjean, believing in strict justice without mercy.

As Cosette grows up, she falls in love with Marius Pontmercy, a young revolutionary. The novel culminates in the Paris Uprising of 1832, where Marius is injured. Valjean saves him, demonstrating his enduring compassion and bravery.

The novel explores the struggles of its characters against the backdrop of political turmoil, highlighting the themes of mercy, justice, and the possibility of redemption. Valjean’s journey from a hardened criminal to a loving father figure embodies the transformative power of love and forgiveness.

Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
