About the Book Lily's Crossing

Lily’s Crossing by Patricia Reilly Giff is a touching young adult novel set during World War II. The story follows Lily Mollahan, a young girl who spends her summers in Rockaway, New York, with her grandmother, Gram, and her father, Poppy.

In the summer of 1944, Lily’s life changes dramatically when her best friend, Margaret, moves away, and her father is drafted into the war. Feeling lonely and abandoned, Lily befriends Albert, a Hungarian refugee with his own tragic past. As their friendship grows, Lily learns about Albert’s struggles and his longing to reunite with his sister, Ruth, who remained in Hungary.

Throughout the novel, Lily grapples with the consequences of her lies and learns valuable lessons about truth, friendship, and the impact of war. The story poignantly explores themes of loss, resilience, and the vital role of human connections in navigating challenging times.
