About the Book Lyddie

Lyddie by Katherine Paterson is a historical novel set in the 19th century that follows the life of a determined young girl named Lyddie Worthen. After her family falls into debt, Lyddie and her brother are sent away to work as indentured servants. Lyddie is determined to reunite her family and works tirelessly to achieve this goal.

The story begins with Lyddie and her family living on a small farm in Vermont. After a bear enters their cabin, Lyddie’s mother decides to leave the farm, taking Lyddie’s younger siblings with her. Lyddie and her brother Charlie are hired out to work to help pay off the family’s debts. Lyddie finds employment at Cutler’s Tavern and later relocates to the textile mills in Lowell, Massachusetts, with the hope of earning enough money to reunite her family.

Lyddie evolves from a young girl burdened by her family’s struggles to a strong, independent individual who fights for her own future.

Lyddie is a compelling story of resilience and personal growth set against the backdrop of the Industrial Revolution. It offers a powerful look at the challenges faced by young workers and the strength required to overcome adversity.

Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
