About the Book M. C. Higgins the Great

M.C. Higgins, the Great by Virginia Hamilton is a powerful coming-of-age novel set in the Appalachian Mountains. The story follows Mayo Cornelius (M.C.) Higgins, a thirteen-year-old boy who lives with his family on Sarah’s Mountain. M.C. spends his days perched atop a forty-foot steel pole, watching over his home and dreaming of a better future.

The novel explores the impact of strip mining on the environment and the lives of the mountain’s inhabitants. M.C. is deeply concerned about the encroaching spoil heap that threatens to bury his home. His dreams of escape are fueled by the arrival of two strangers: one who has the potential to make his mother’s singing famous, and another who embodies a freedom M.C. has never known.

Throughout the story, M.C. struggles with his sense of identity, his connection to his family, and his desire for a different life. The novel delves into themes of tradition versus change, the importance of family, and the struggle for personal freedom.

Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
