About the Book Madeline's Rescue

Madeline’s Rescue by Ludwig Bemelmans is a charming children’s book that continues the adventures of the brave little girl, Madeline. In this story, Madeline falls into the Seine River during a walk through Paris and is heroically rescued by a stray dog. The girls at the boarding school, along with their caretaker Miss Clavel, decide to adopt the dog and name her Genevieve.

However, when the school’s trustees discover Genevieve, they deem her unsuitable and send her away. The girls are heartbroken and search all over Paris to find their beloved dog. Eventually, Genevieve returns, and the story concludes with a happy reunion, emphasizing themes of loyalty, bravery, and the bond between humans and animals.

This delightful tale, accompanied by Bemelmans’ whimsical illustrations, won the Caldecott Medal in 1954 and remains a beloved classic for readers of all ages.
