About the Book Maus

Maus I: A Survivor’s Tale by Art Spiegelman is a powerful graphic novel that intertwines two narratives: the harrowing experiences of Vladek Spiegelman, a Jewish survivor of the Holocaust, and the complex relationship between Vladek and his son, Artie, who is documenting his father’s story.

The novel begins with Artie visiting his father, Vladek, in New York City. Vladek, who is now elderly and frail, recounts his life before and during World War II. He describes his early years in Poland, his marriage to Anja, and the birth of their son, Richieu. As the war progresses, Vladek is drafted into the Polish army, captured by the Nazis, and eventually becomes a prisoner of war.

Upon his release, Vladek returns to his family, only to find that life for Jews in Poland has become increasingly perilous. The Nazis begin rounding up Jews and sending them to concentration camps. Vladek and Anja endure unimaginable hardships, including life in the ghettos and the constant threat of deportation.

The narrative also delves into the strained relationship between Artie and Vladek. Artie struggles to understand his father’s obsessive behaviors and the trauma that has shaped him. The story is illustrated with anthropomorphic characters, with Jews depicted as mice and Nazis as cats, adding a unique visual dimension to the tale.

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
