About the Book Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel

Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel by Virginia Lee Burton is a beloved children’s classic that tells the story of Mike Mulligan and his trusty steam shovel, Mary Anne. As modern gasoline, electric, and diesel-powered shovels begin to replace steam shovels, Mike and Mary Anne find themselves out of work.

Determined to prove their worth, they travel to a small town where a new town hall is being built. Mike promises that he and Mary Anne can dig the cellar in just one day, a task that would normally take a hundred men a week. They successfully complete the job, but realize they have no way to get Mary Anne out of the cellar. A young boy suggests converting Mary Anne into the building’s heating system, and Mike becomes the janitor The story highlights themes of perseverance, adaptation, and the value of hard work and ingenuity.

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
