About the Book Milkweed

Milkweed by Jerry Spinelli is a young adult historical fiction novel set during World War II in Warsaw, Poland. The story follows a young orphan boy, initially known only as “Stopthief,” who survives by stealing food and living on the streets. He is taken in by a group of Jewish orphans led by a boy named Uri, who gives him the name Misha Pilsudski and a fabricated backstory.

As the Nazis, referred to as “Jackboots,” invade Warsaw, Misha witnesses the increasing brutality and oppression faced by the Jewish community. Despite his naivety and initial admiration for the Jackboots’ uniforms, Misha’s experiences in the Warsaw Ghetto reveal the harsh realities of the Holocaust. He forms a close bond with a Jewish girl named Janina and becomes determined to help her family survive by smuggling food into the ghetto.

The novel explores themes of identity, resilience, and the loss of innocence in the face of unimaginable adversity. Through Misha’s journey, readers gain a deeper understanding of the human capacity for both cruelty and compassion during one of history’s darkest periods.

Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
