About the Book Moonshiner's Son

Moonshiner’s Son by Carolyn Reeder is a historical novel set during the Prohibition era in the Appalachian Mountains. The story follows 12-year-old Tom Higgins, who is learning the craft of moonshining from his father, June Higgins. Moonshining has been a family tradition for generations, and Tom is determined to become a skilled apprentice despite the legal and moral challenges posed by Prohibition.

The arrival of a new preacher and his daughter, Amy Taylor, brings conflict and change to the community. Amy is opposed to moonshining, viewing it as a source of evil, while Tom begins to question the morality of his family’s trade. Through his friendship with Amy and his experiences at the new school, Tom learns to read and discovers his talent for storytelling.

The novel explores complex themes such as the impact of Prohibition on rural communities, the clash between tradition and change, and the personal growth of a young boy caught between his family’s expectations and his own developing sense of right and wrong.

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
